Steilhoogte Primary is a rural farm school in the Matzikama district, halfway between Klawer and Vredendal. As many of the social problems that the children are afflicted with derive from poor circumstances at home, both socially and financially, the school cannot address all of a kid’s needs, and therefore moms with better incomes and new skills are able to give their children the opportunity to have a better future. Children that are in the “Bron” classroom, with learning difficulties and a small chance to enter college, also need a “go-to” solution for their future.
A new venture has now been launched: skills development for moms and teenagers with the possibility of learning a new trade and earning an income. The project: unique textile designs using lino block hand-printing and manufacturing interior design products using 100% organic fabrics such as cotton and hemp.
Although the dream to start a skills development program is not a new one – the project started in July 2020 at the school, in a space especially designed and equipped for such a project. Stellar Wine Cellars Foundation provided a start-up fund which enabled the program to be launched. Four ladies are already enrolled in the program – with a small production unit on its way to being fully equipped and ready to enter the local market with the prospect of selling nationally, and on the internet, if all goes well.
Entrepreneurial skills are part of the training program with a long-term vision to equip the participants to manage the program independently.
