The Long Route
The spectacular 80km route (1300 m of elevation) is a ride of 2 worlds. The first half will be on the escarpment of Bergkraal on some splendid new trails through wheat fields, beautiful rock formations, fynbos and scenic arid landscapes. On this section of the trail riders may be rewarded with a range of wildlife sightings. After a fast and exhilarating descend into Trawal wine cellar, riders will enjoy a wonderful waterpoint WITHIN Trawal wine cellar. This is also spectator point 1. Here supporters can enjoy a lovely wine tasting. (Those riders not in a rush are welcome to do the same.)
Directly after Trawal cellar, the backside of Remhoogte hill awaits, which is the easier approach to this climb. This is the main climb of the day. Hereafter the second halve of the route will descend into the Olifants River valley for a second refreshment station at the beautiful Idma@Kapel venue (spectator point 2). At Idma@Kapel, spectators can enjoy a lovely meal and refreshments.
From here on riders will have a comfortable ride on the banks of the Olifants before taking on the pinnacle of the route, up Skaapkop hill, roughly 10 km’s from the end. Riders will enjoy some breath-taking views of the valley underneath. Be sure to pack a cell phone, this is selfie heaven! The descend down Skaapkop is sure to get your heartbeat rushing.
The 3rd spectator point is at Teubes Family Wines, roughly 2 km’s from the end. Yes, only 2 km’s from the end, because there’s a very special surprise awaiting riders which simply had to be included. Riders will finish by RIDING THROUGH Spruitdrift WINE CELLAR, part of the largest singular wine cellar in SA, Namaqua Wines. Riders finish at Die Keldery restaurant.
This is an untimed, non-technical route, but a moderate level of fitness and experience is advised. This event was carefully planned to maximise rider AND supporter experience. Supporters can spend comfortable time at each of the spectator points and still meet riders when finishing. Spectator points are easily accessible.
The Short Route
The Vines and Views SHORT route will start at the beautiful Idma@Kapel venue. This will lead to a major improvement in rider experience. The short route will start at 09:00 which means riders can still enjoy a lovely breakfast at the starting venue.
The short route will be a fast, untimed, non-technical 30km ride with 450m of climbing. The iconic Skaapkop climb will be included in the short route, meaning riders on the short route will also enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the Olifants River valley.
Also included in this ride will be the spectator point at Teubes Family Wines AS WELL as the new finale riding THROUGH the wine cellar at Namaqua Wines. This event is ideally suited for the weekend warrior looking for a fun day with friends.
Riders on the short route will enjoy splendid scenery on the banks of the Olifants River, previously reserved for the long ride only, while traversing the vineyards of Kapel for the first 10 km’s.
Riders might even be rewarded with the morning call of the African Fish Eagle! This event was carefully planned to maximise rider AND supporter experience.
