Suggested itineraries

If you’re stuck for suggestions, here are a few ideas how to get the best of the Namaqua West Coast.

1-Day
Book an early morning guided walk on the Knersvlakte followed by wine tasting near Vredendal. Drive to pretty Doringbaai harbour for a lunch in sight of seagulls and surf. Spend the afternoon on the Strandfontein cliffs looking for whales and then birdwatching near Papendorp before taking dinner on a wine farm in Lutzville. Conclude your day in a spectacular way – go star-gazing with a local guide.

2-Day
Start off with breakfast in Vanrhynsdorp and explore the sites, like the the old gaol.
Having built up an appetite, lunch in Vanrhynsdorp before venturing south to the Gifberg with its magnificent views and the Ouberg Waterfall. On your return, stop for dinner at a farm or local restaurant.

On the second day, make sure you’ve got a few sandwiches on hand and join an early morning charter fishing trip from the seaside hamlet of Papendorp. When you return, it’s time for a pre-booked lunch of bokkoms and other local delicacies with a family at nearby Ebenhaezer. Now take it easy with a slow drive and wine-tasting at some of the award-winning farms around Vredendal, one of which you can pick for your dinner.

3-Day
Make it a quick breakfast in Vredendal and stocking up on road-trip snacks before heading out to explore the fascinating towns and villages of the Hardeveld. You can stop for a leg-stretch in Bitterfontein. The afternoon will be taken up as you finish the route, making sure you’re in time for sunset and a beach picnic at Strandfontein.

Rise and shine for a bite in Strandfontein then stroll the easy 7km walk along the coast from the town to Doringbaai (making arrangements for transport back). Rest up with a leisurely wine tasting and lunch at the harbour before taking a leisurely drive back to Vredendal, stopping at Papendorp, Ebenhaezer and the Sishen-Saldanha railway bridge. Check your guidebook for a great dinner spot among the vineyards.

It’s another early start today because you’re off on an exhilarating mountain bike ride in the beautiful foothills of the Matzikama Mountains. Take breakfast in Vanrhynsdorp followed by a walk about town exploring its sights. Now, head north to the Knersvlakte for a guided walk that ends with lunch at a quirky roadside farmstall. All that’s left is to return to Vredendal to shop for souvenirs and dinner as a way of wrapping up a fantastic break.
