More rugged, mountain hiking can be done on the eastern perimeter of the southern Namaqualand, where holiday farms can serve as a convenient base. Routes are well marked and vary from short strolls to full-day hikes. There are also several 4x4 routes. Some guest lodges also allow visitors to camp on river banks. A two-day trail on the Gifberg Mountain takes hikers from the summit to the Ouberg Waterfalls. The 380m waterfall in the Troe-Troe River is one of South Africa’s highest. It doesn’t always flow, so if you’re keen to see it, diarize the rainy season from April to November.
